Marine road, off Liverpool route in Apapa, Lagos, is currently facing imminent collapse, prompting residents, motorists, workers and businesses to raise the alarm over what they describe as a looming disaster.
The road, a vital access route for residents, commercial vehicles and port users within the Apapa axis, has developed extensive cracks and deep fissures, with large sections of the asphalt visibly displaced and at risk of caving in.

A visit to the area showed that the affected stretch has become a disaster waiting to happen.
Wide cracks now cut across the carriageway, while portions of the road have sunk significantly, creating deep cavities that pose serious risks to motorists and pedestrians.
Concerned residents have placed concrete traffic drums and caution tape around the failed section in an attempt to avert accidents. Despite the makeshift barriers, the road remains hazardous, particularly at night when visibility is poor.
The worsening condition has heightened fears that the continuous movement of heavy-duty trucks and articulated vehicles along the corridor could trigger a complete collapse at any time.
Beyond the immediate safety risks, the deteriorating road has become a major challenge for residents, employees of nearby companies and visitors who rely on the route daily. Motorists are forced to navigate around the damaged sections, while pedestrians walk dangerously close to the unstable edges.
Residents warned that if urgent repairs are not carried out, the road could become impassable, cutting off access to homes and businesses and increasing the likelihood of fatal accidents.
They expressed disappointment that despite the obvious danger, no government agency has begun emergency repairs or taken visible steps to address the situation.
According to residents, the cracks have widened steadily, particularly after recent rainfall, suggesting that the structural failure extends beneath the surface and could deteriorate further without immediate intervention.
“This is no longer an ordinary pothole. This road is collapsing before our very eyes. Every day the cracks become wider, and everybody who passes here fears the worst. We are simply waiting for disaster if nothing is done urgently,” a resident said.
Another commuter described the road as “a ticking time bomb,” warning that it may only take one heavily loaded truck or another spell of heavy rainfall for the damaged section to give way completely.
The situation has also raised concerns over potential disruption to commercial activities within the Apapa port corridor should the road become impassable.
Marine Road serves as an important link within Apapa, connecting residential communities and business premises while providing an alternative route to the Liverpool Road corridor. Its collapse would further worsen traffic congestion and disrupt economic activities in one of Nigeria’s busiest port districts.
Residents and other stakeholders have therefore called on the Apapa Local Government, the Lagos State Government, the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, and other relevant agencies to immediately conduct a comprehensive structural assessment of the failed section and begin emergency reconstruction.
They urged authorities not to wait until tragedy strikes before responding, stressing that timely intervention would save lives, protect businesses and prevent more costly repairs in the future.
The residents also appealed to emergency management agencies to strengthen safety measures around the affected area pending permanent repairs.
For those who live and work along Marine Road, every day without government intervention increases the risk of a catastrophic collapse.
The warning signs are unmistakable. The road continues to crack, the surface is sinking, and residents fear that without urgent action, disaster may only be a matter of time.
