NIMASA Renews Capacity Development Partnership with World Maritime University

As part of continued effort to strengthen technical and regulatory competence of its personnel, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, has signed another four-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Maritime University (WMU),

A move aimed at strengthening capacity development ties with the university.

The MoU first signed in 2022, is targeted at sponsoring a minimum of 10 officers annually for the 14-month Master of Science programme at WMU in Malmö for the 2026–2029 intakes.

Speaking on this development, the Director General of the Agency, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, described the collaboration as a cornerstone of the Agency’s human capital development framework and a strategic investment in Nigeria’s maritime future.

He identified the long-standing partnership as a significant strategy that has enhanced the Agency’s technical and regulatory capabilities.

Dr. Mobereola noted that officers trained at WMU have bolstered the Agency’s effectiveness in maritime safety administration, environmental compliance, maritime law and shipping management, while also strengthening Nigeria’s engagement at the International Maritime Organization and other global maritime platforms.

He informed that at least one officer will be sponsored each year for the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programme jointly delivered by WMU and the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI), Malta.

The agreement according to the DG include learning opportunities, development courses, research collaboration and technical assistance aimed at strengthening NIMASA’s capacity in maritime safety, environmental management, seafarer certification and implementation of international maritime instruments.

WMU will further explore additional fellowship opportunities from international donors for qualified NIMASA candidates.

The MoU was signed on behalf of NIMASA by Dr. Mobereola, while WMU President, Professor Maximo Q. Mejia Jr., signed for the University. NIMASA’s Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Chudi Offodile, and WMU Registrar, Mr. Peter Marriott, signed as witnesses.

Established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, WMU was mandated to build global maritime capacity, particularly in developing countries. Over the years, Nigeria has benefited considerably from the training of NIMASA officers at the University, contributing to stronger national maritime governance and enhanced international representation.
