The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi has called for improved sporting infrastructure across the Service’s formations, noting that adequate facilities are essential to developing officers’ sporting talents.

Adeniyi made the call on Saturday, 5 September 2026, while speaking at the closing ceremony of the NCS Zone A Inter-Commamd Games Competition held at Customs Training College, Ikeja, Lagos.

He expressed concern over the deplorable state of sporting infrastructure at the training college, stressing the condition is unacceptable for an Agency that had contributed significantly to sports development in Nigeria.

Adeniyi posited that the facility had remained largely unchanged since he trained at the college more than 30 years back.

To him, Customs had produced athletes and teams that had excelled in various sporting competitions.

“The Service was the defending champion in male and female volleyball and had also performed strongly in basketball, football, athletics and beach volleyball,” thus the need to revamp sports facilities within the Service.

CGC Adeniyi disclosed that the Service has commenced construction of an ultra-modern sporting facility in one of its barracks in Kano, adding that a befitting sports facility would be included in the proposed new location of the Customs Training College.

The Customs boss also commended sister security agencies that participated in the event, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) describing their presence as a demonstration of collaboration and partnership in the discharge of national security responsibilities.

Speaking further, he underscored the importance of the competitions to Customs personnel, charging the officers to apply the skills gained to their professional duties, particularly in discipline, teamwork and strategy.

“Just as success in sports required discipline and effective teamwork, Customs operations and revenue generation also required clear strategies and coordinated efforts”.

Adeniyi congratulated winners of the game and encouraged those who lost to prepare for future competitions, urging officers to maintain the spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The Customs Police Unit (CPU) emerged winner of the football competition at the just concluded NCS Zone A Inter-Commamd Games Competition.
