Ogun I Customs Strengthens Bilateral Ties With Benin Republic, Hosts Joint Border Security Forum

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, recently held a joint border security forum aimed at boosting regional security and facilitating smooth cross-border trade with Benin Republic.

The engagement, brought together heads of sister security agencies from both countries and other relevant stakeholders involved in border management, to discuss challenges and solutions to trade and security along the corridor.

Speaking at the forum, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs (DC) Oladapo Afeni, stated that his mandate as Chairman of the Joint Security Forum prioritises securing the border as a foundation for effective trade facilitation and revenue generation.

“My aim is to reappraise the security situation at the border to discuss issues impeding the smooth flow of trade and regional security, he stated.

Afeni noted that the presence of Beninese counterparts underscored the importance of bilateral collaboration in resolving shared challenges. “Our counterpart from the Republic of Benin are here, so we are going to discuss issues affecting both sides, including multiple checkpoints,” he said.

The DC explained that while security remains paramount, efficient cargo movement along border corridors can only be achieved through sustained cooperation among key stakeholders.

He assured that the Command is set for a strong year, with officers and men committed to surpassing previous achievements.

The engagement also featured an interactive session during which participants identified challenges and proposed solutions aimed at reducing travel time and improving business activities along the Idiroko border axis.
