‘Full Compliance with MARPOL Annex VI is Non- Negotiable for all Vessels’ – DG NIMASA Emphasised

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola has emphasised that full compliance with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI is non-negotiable for all vessels operating in Nigerian waters. This convention specifically addresses the prevention of air pollution from ships.
In a statement signed recently by the Agency’s spokesperson, Osagie Edward, the Director General stated that in line with the statutory mandate under the NIMASA Act 2007 and the Merchant Shipping Act 2007, NIMASA has issued a Marine Notice to guide ship-owners, charterers, and shipping companies on their obligations.
“While we encourage shipping businesses in Nigeria, we remain committed to ensuring that international standards are not compromised,” he emphasised.

The Statement reads further that NIMASA will intensify monitoring and enforcement mechanism, collaborating with industry Stakeholders to ensure full compliance with international environmental obligations in Nigerian waters.
MARPOL Annex VI, which Nigeria has domesticated under the Merchant Shipping Act, 2007 (MSA, 2007), specifically addresses the prevention of air pollution from ships.
By emphasising the importance of compliance the Agency aims to protect Nigeria’s marine environment and also align its maritime operations with global best practices in safety, security, and environmental protection.
